    Indian gods and music instruments: The divine connection

    Spirituality has often been connected with music and Indian tradition has many gods, connected with music. When we talk about musical instruments and gods, the one that always comes to mind is the goddess Saraswati, the goddess of music, art, knowledge, and wisdom.

    Sitting beautifully and playing the ancient instrument veena, she is one of the most adored goddesses in Hindu tradition, she is not the only one who flourishes a musical instrument. Indian gods and musical instruments have a strange relation, with each of them carrying one as either a weapon or a symbol of one of their qualities.

    Shiva and his Damru and Veena

    The master of all art forms, Shiva is an amazing dancer, artist, musician, and the destroyer himself. It is said that when Shiva plays his damru, the holy sound of musical instruments scares even the brutal and most savages of evil whereas it convinces and relaxes the good.

    Even today damru is popularly respected and used all over India, we see very few people having the real skills to understand its sound, its depth, and therefore its music.

    In many legends, it is said that shiva also makes one of the most difficult veenas in the world, the Rudra veena, which is bigger and more difficult to play as compared to another form of veena.

    Saraswati and veena

    As we mentioned above, the goddess Saraswati is the goddess of music, art, knowledge, and wisdom. She is universally worshipped for her skills and her kind heart, as believers search for her blessings before starting on any musical journey.

    After her name, this new variety of veena has been named quite suitable. As easy as it seems to play this instrument, learning and playing this veena needs an extreme number of efforts, dedication, and commitment.

    Apart from goddess Saraswati and lord Shiva, many gods play veena such as goddess Saraswati’s brother Narada and her father, Brahma.

    Krishna and flute

    One of the most famous gods when it comes to musical instruments, Krishna is said to have pledged millions of living organisms with his beautiful tunes ever since he was a child. Not only he was a master flute player, but his holy tunes could also captivate anyone who was listening to him playing the flute be it an animal or a person.

    The flute, being one of the oldest musical instruments known to mankind, has always held on to special in world music.

    Even though we don’t find such magical flute players, we can firmly say that such musical instruments with holy connections continue to hit the sweet spot with the audience, even after thousands of years.

    Nandi and mridangam

    Shiva’s most trusted and beloved believer, Nandi played the mridangam when Shiva was dancing. It is also said whenever Shiva dances, the beats of Nandi’s mridangam make his dance even more powerful and both of the supernatural divine sites, complement each other in ideal harmony, something behind imagination for all. Having partnered with him in his ancient dance, the heavens resound with the vibrancy of the beats from Nandi’s mridangam, shaking even the energy of God and demigods.

    Narad and Kartal

    Last but not least, the solitary lord Narad and his Kartal have another beautiful relationship. Many gods and goddess use their instruments as a symbol of power, giving, art form, or knowledge, lord Narad uses his Kartal for praying. A loyal Vishnu devotee, you are going to always find Narad’s explanation even in ancient texts, as a hermit playing on the Kartal and “Ektara”, the string instrument during praying to his lord, Vishnu.

    There are ten million gods and goddesses and to cover all of them who live to play musical instruments would be very tough. Indian gods and musical instruments have a holy connection which is why music is not just an art form in India, it is a means of spirituality and worship of god like never before.
