    Indraprastha in Mahabharata and Lord Krishna's Role

    Who built Indraprastha in Mahabharata?

    Lord Vishwakarma built the beautiful city of Indraprastha. It is famous for its beauty and majesty, involving beautiful gardens and magnificent palaces.

    The story behind the construction of Indraprastha in Mahabharata

    The construction story of the city of Indraprastha begins even before the Kurukshetra war. Dhritarashtra called Pandavas’s brother, and father of Kauravas handed over the land of Khandavprastha to Yudhistir. In that situation, Yudhishtir thought it would be good for them to leave Hastinapur, as staying in the same city would lead to war between Pandavas and Kauravas Additionally, the land Dhritarashtra gave to the Pandavas was barren. Lord Indra cursed the land.

    Burning of Khandavaprastha Forest

    Let's learn about how Lord Agni, along with Arjun and Krishna, burned down the Khandava forest to create the city of Indraprastha in the Mahabharata.


    Krishna and Arjun's help to Agni

    After Dhritarashtra handed over the land to Pandavas’s brother, they left Hastinapur. They only see a waste and barren forest when they reach there. As they had somewhere to stay, they went to a jungle with the guidance of Lord Krishna.

    Also, during their stay in the forest, Krishna and Arjun met Agni, who wanted to burn the forest to satisfy his hunger. Upon hearing this, Krishna and Arjun realized that burning down the forest would be rewarding. This will help them to get rid of Asuras, Rakhas, and Nagas who were living there. However, whenever Agni causes the forest to catch fire, Lord Indra puts out the flames with water. Lord Indra was protecting the deity of Khandava forest.

    How did Agni finally burn the forest?

    Agni’s continuous efforts to set the Khandavaprastha on fire, he regularly failed because of Lord Indra. In the end, Agni went for help from Krishna and Arjuna to set a fire in Khandava forest. Finally, Agni burns the forest with the help of Arjun and Krishna by disguising himself as Brahmana.

    When they saw a fire, Lord Indra tried to put it out with rain, but Arjuna and Krishna shot arrows to stop the rain. This makes lord Indra angry, resulting in injuring Arjun with his Vajra. Arjun and Krishna defeated all Devas, Rakshas, and Asuras in the battle and were successful in burning down the forest.


    Krishna's role in building Indraprastha in Mahabharata

    After clearing the Khandeva forest, they were ready to build the city of Indraprastha in Mahabharata. During their journey, Lord Krishna, who was always with the Pandavas brothers, asked Lord Vishwakarma to create and design Indraprastha. Lord Krishna was the one who planned and created the city of Indraprastha in the Mahabharata. Lord Krishna decided to construct the site near the banks of River Yamuna, where Pandavas had been living in exile.


    How did the Pandavas' city appear after it was constructed?

    The city seems so beautiful that nobody would believe it was a barren land that had turned into a city from heaven. Indraprastha had tall walls built from white marble and stones. It had also a beautiful palace, gardens, streams, and parks.
