History and significance of Baisakhi or Vaisakhi
Baisakhi or Vaisakhi was one of the 3 festivals that the 3rd Sikh guru, Guru Amar Das, chose to be celebrated by Sikhs. In 1699, the 9th guru, Guru Teg Bahadur, was publicly killed by the Mughals. This occurred because of his willingness to oppose the Mughal occupiers and protect the cultural identity of Hindus and Sikhs whom the Mughal rural Aurangzeb wanted to convert to Islam. In 1699, on Baisakhi or Vaisakhi day, his son Guru Gobind Rai, regrouped the Sikhs and inspired them through his words and actions, committing upon them and himself the title of Singh or lion, thus becoming Guru Gobind Singh.
The 3 Ks of Sikhism was adopted and the guru system was eliminated, with Sikhs being urged to accept the Granth Sahib as an eternal guide. Thus, the festival of Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is observed as the inauguration of the last guru, Guru Gobind Singh, as well as the foundation of Khalsa Panth of Sikhism, granting it a position of great importance to Sikhism, and one of the biggest Sikh festivals.
Baisakhi or Vaisakhi was also the day of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919, when the British colonists trapped and murdered Indians, acting as a major action in the Indian freedom struggle.
