    Vat Purnima Vrat 2024: Date, Significance, History and Ritual

    Vat Purnima puja 2024 date is on Jyeshtha Amavasya and the day of the puja is going to be on Friday which falls on 21 June 2024.

    This is one of the festivals of India, perhaps the most popular that happens twice a year, both on the bright and the dark half of the moon.

    Vat Purnima Vrat 2024: Date

    Vat Purnima is a festival where Hindu women fast to seek the health and long life of their husbands. It is planned for July but this year it will occur on the 21st of June. The festival is celebrated in the Purnima calendar and is called Vat Purnima during the Jyeshtha Amavasya.

    While some people prefer the dark fortnight to observe the vrat puja it is called Vat Savitri Amavasya Vrat, while others celebrate the puja on the bright fortnight and it is called Vat Purnima Vrat. This is a belief that the fast blesses the devotees and the women can effect change and bring luck and a perspective to their husbands.

    Vat Purnima tithi begins on 21 June at 7: 31 A.M and ends on 22nd June at 6: 37 a.m. According to the Indian calendar, it lasts up to one month's end but unfortunately, Married women of Maharashtra, Gujrat & Southern Indian States complete this Vrat 15 days earlier than North Indian Women.

    Vat Purnima Vrat 2024: Significance

    The Vat Purnima Vrat occurred on the 21st of June this year. Vat Purnima Vrat is the fast kept by the married women of Hinduism, according to the legend great Savitri defeated lord Yama, the lord of death by challenging him to bring Satyawan back to life.

    Therefore, married women celebrate Vat Purnima Vrat to seek a long life and the well-being of their husbands. Another tree of special importance rooted in Hinduism is the Vat or Banyan tree. The structure symbolizes Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva – the three supreme Hindu gods; married women fast for three days starting two days before the day of the full moon in the month of Jyeshtha.

    Vat Purnima Vrat 2024: Rituals

    At the time of the fast, after sunset, it is advisable to take a bath and pray to Goddess Savitri and Satyawan at the peepal tree. Husbands must perform this Vrat and puja themselves or if married women want to perform this Vrat and puja, they must put on new colorful clothes, new bangles, and sindoor on the forehead. They placed one leaf of banyan on their hair one part of the tree with human contact.

    Some rituals are followed by married women:

    • On Vat Purnima Vrat, a Hindu married woman starts the fast from Thrayodashi Tithi of the Hindu calendar.
    • Below are some of the procedures done on the first day of the fast.
    • Eat the roots of the Banyan tree on Vat Vrat Day.
    • Then women paint the Banyan tree on the wood or plate it with turmeric or sandalwood paste and worship this for the next three days.
    • Fasting on the fourth day should be done in the morning; to do this properly, wake up for a bath early in the morning.
    • Campaign in the society for creating the Idol of Satyawan Savitri and Yam raj in the courtyard of the Banyan tree.
    • Bridal clothes and accessories including jewelry and sindoor marks on the forehead of women wear.
    • Praying to the Banyan tree and also offer prayers to the Savitri who is regarded to be a goddess.
    • Spread vermillion near the tree and should also tie yellow or red-colored sacred threads around the tree trunk.
    • Then walk clockwise around the tree 7 times and pray.
    • In case you are still a young unmarried woman, you can dress majestically in a yellow sari and pray to find a good husband for your life.
    • It is followed by taking the prasad which consists of wet pulses, mango, jack fruits, banana and lemon will break the Purnima.

    Vat Purnima Vrat 2024: History

    Princess Savitri who fell in love with Satyawan came to know that Satyawan would die within a year she vowed not to let him die. As a prophecy, after one year Satyawan passed away in the forest cutting woods under a Banyan tree and the Yamraj arrived to take his soul.

    Yamraj was astonished to see Savitri’s plead to spare his life and Yamraj was compelled to acknowledge Savitri’s strong fervor thus he brought back Savitri's husband; Mohsin. The Satyawan-Savitri story contains the real image of a husband-and-wife relationship and the real charm of married life.
