    Wangala Festival is a 100-drum festival celebrated in Meghalaya, India. On this day, we worship the Sun God, who gives good results in the harvest fields. People celebrate this in the first week of November. The local people wear traditional clothes to celebrate this festival.

    This is one of the most colorful festivals. The Garo Tribe community celebrates it for seven days. People sponsor the festival, and the best dance group wins money. It is observed as a public holiday in Meghalaya.

    Who is the Garo Community?

    The Garo people are a group of tribes living in the northeastern parts of India, specifically in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, as well as in Bangladesh. They are the last remaining tribes in Northeast India. Their language is part of Sino-Tibetan languages. They celebrate the Wangala festival in November. These tribes also celebrate Rongchu Gala, Ja Megapa, Sa Sat Ra Chaka, Mangona, etc.


    Wangala Festival: History of the festival

    This festival is celebrated by the Garo Community. This festival is dedicated to Sun God. The people worship Saljong God (God of fertility). They take their blessings at the Wangala Festival. This cultural festival improves a sense of harmony among the community tribes.

    On this day, they arrange two dance events: Rugala and Kakkat, which are two different dance forms of Meghalaya. The Garo people celebrate this festival to showcase the cultural identity of tribes and promote their rich cultural heritage from one generation to another.

    There are some rituals of the festivals:

    1. The 1st day ritual is Rugala. On this day, a priest lights incense sticks and pours rice beer. They make special rice paste to decorate chiefs’ houses.
    2. The 2nd day ritual is to rejoice. People do dance in 2 parallel lines.
    3. The boys and girls of the Garo community, participate in the festival.
    4. 100 Pantes play the bamboo flutes.
    5. People worship the sun god at this festival.
