Why Should We Fast on Maha Shivaratri?

In Maha Shivaratri we observe a day fast known as Shivaratri fast or Shivaratri vrat, searching for the blessings of lord Shiva. In India, many believers do the Shivaratri fast. They all gather in Shiva temples around Shivalinga with their offerings. They pray, chant, and do fasting all day and night. The fast or vrat is at the heart of the celebration and many follow it seriously to increase the dignity of their vows and intentions.

This fast or vrat is unique from those followed during other Hindu festivals, where believers eat food after performing the pooja of the shiva. On this big night of lord shiva, the fast or vrat continues through the day and night.

The story behind Maha Shivaratri fast

The gods and demons were always at war with each other. on the advice of lord Vishnu, they stir an ocean of milk together for amrita, the drink of immortality. They used Vasuki, the snake that sits on lord shiva’s neck, as a rope and the first thing that came out of it was the poison. The gods and demons prayed to lord shiva requesting his help. The lord shiva drank all the poison and saved them.

His wife, goddess Parvati, was concerned that the poison would enter the lord Shiva’s body and cause him pain. So, she held his throat to stop the poison from spreading, for one day and one night, which is why he turned blue. As goddess Parvati fasted for the entire day and night, so it has become an old tradition to fast and stay awake all night during Maha Shivaratri.
