The Kavad Yatra 2024 starts on 22nd July 2024 and ends on 2nd August 2024, which is Sawan Shivratri. Believers look forward to the holy journey of Kavad yatra all year long.

Sawan Shivratri is a day when believers do jalabhishek. There will be 2 monthly shivratris this year 2024, when Sawan falls during Adhik mass.

• The 1st Sawan Shivratri is on the 15th of July, and the water offering time is auspicious on the 16th of July from 12:11 Am to 12:54 Am.
• The 2nd Sawan Shivratri falls on the 14th of August, the auspicious time for offering water on the 15th of August is between 12:09 Am to 12:54 Am.

 Kavad Yatra 2024: Rituals

The “Kanvar” is carried by pilgrims on their both shoulders during the Kavad Yatra. A “Kanvar” is a bamboo pole with 2 colorful clay pots connected to its both ends. While doing this trip, the Kanvarias balance the Kanvar on their shoulders and fill pots with holy water for offerings at Shivalinga.

The Kawar yatra is a month-long occasion in which kanvarias collect holly water from pilgrimage sites while walking barefoot and dressed in saffron-colored clothes. After that, believers go back to their hometown and visit the temple to do the Jalabhishek of the Shivling. It is an expression of gratitude for everything good in their lives.

The only thing to keep in mind is to ensure that pots never come into contact with the ground when traveling. All along the route, there are many temporary platforms where kanvarias might stop and relax.

Kanvarias groups walk throughout this holy yatra. While many believers walk the whole distance, some also use motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, jeeps, or mini-tucks to get there. These believers of lord shiva sing “Bol Bam” and other believers bhajans in his honor during the journey.

How did Kavad Yatra start?

According to mythology, the 1st kanvarias was a believer of lord Shiva named Ravana. Ravana was the first one who brought Ganga water and used it to Jal Abhishek the shivling during the crisis brought on by Samudra Manthan and the appearance of poison, aiding lord shiva in neutralizing poison.

Kavad Yatra 2024: Significances

The Kavar yatra occasion has a unique meaning. By chanting a sacred hymn, the kanvars try to calm their minds and take spiritual breaks through this type of devotion. It is a distraction from difficult and unpleasant conditions with the potential to give inspired thoughts along the route.

Kavad Yatra 2024: Story

According to mythology, there are 14 rubies arose during the Samudra Manthan period, which occurred under the period of Savan. They were all divided between gods and demons.

There was poison present. lord Shiva drank all the poison. Lord Vishnu chanted in his heart; the poison was kept in his throat. As s result, lord shiva obtained the title Neelkanth, which translates to “Blur throat”.

There is also a story that lord shiva was given holy water maa ganga by Raavan, also known as the king of devils. It reduces the toxicity in his throat. To him, everyone has made the same offer. As a result, we still celebrate Kavad yatra and offer lord shiva water from the Maa Ganga River.

Kavad Yatra 2024: Important guidelines

Believers must obey many laws and guidelines on their Kavad Yatra. Let’s know important guidelines: -

1. During the Kavar yatra, transportation is prohibited. During the Kavar yatra, all believers should be barefoot.
2. It is prohibited to take alcohol, meat, or narcotics. It is also forbidden to eat tamasic food, which includes garlic, onions, and other ingredients.
3. Believers cannot Touch Kanwar without taking a bath.
4. You cannot keep Kanwar on furniture.
