    The Real Story of Kesari

    Akshay Kumar’s movie ‘Kesari’ depicts the story of the Battle of Saragarhi. The real story of Kesari is one of the greatest triumphs Indian soldiers under British command had in the nineteenth century.     Where is Saragarhi?

    Saragarhi is a small village near the modern-day Pakistan-Afghanistan border, just a few hours outside Peshawar.


    Who fought the Battle of Saragarhi?

    21 soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army fought the epic Battle of Saragarhi against over 10,000 Pashtun tribesmen. In September 1987, the British Army put in a lot of effort to take control of the hilly Central Asian provinces, of present-day Afghanistan. Back then, the British Army was in a long-standing conflict with the local tribes and clans. The Battle of Saragarhi was one of the many battles fought between the Indian soldiers from the British Army and the local tribes. Many Indian foot soldiers were also martyred towards the British cause.


    Why did the Battle of Saragarhi happen?

    Two fortresses in Afghanistan, Fort Gulistan and Fort Lockhart, were under British control then. These two forts communicated with each other using flash mirrors and the pattern of Morse code. Since the distance between was quite significant, a signaling station at Saragarhi was set up particularly to relay messages from one end to another. At this signaling station, 21 soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment were deputed.

     

    Under the command of Havildar Ishar Singh, the 21 Sikh soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment fought for over six hours with their 0.303 caliber single-loading rifles, ensuring that every shot was fatal. The battle rages on. The soldiers’ low ammunition compelled them to ask for help from the British command never arrived. Havildar Ishar Singh, with his pistol and sword orders his soldiers to fall back on the last line of defence. Each of those 21 soldiers fights with all their might and ensures the two forts receive enough time to prepare for the impending attack. Eventually, the tribesmen set the Saragarhi fort on fire.


    Who won the Battle of Saragarhi?

    Under the command of Havildar Ishar Singh, the 21 Sikh soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment killed between 180-600 Afghan tribesmen. Even though each of the soldiers eventually succumbed to the attack, they won the pride of the nation with their courage and bravery. Plus, their perseverance gave Fort Gulistan and Fort Lockhart time to prepare for the attack. In the Battle of Saragarhi, the fort of Saragarhi fell though it was soon recaptured by the British forces.
