    Who is Goddess Saraswati?

Maa Saraswati is the goddess who represents knowledge and wisdom. Also, she makes us more indulgent in art, literature, and culture. But the question is where did she come from? Is Saraswati being the daughter of Brahma?

One of the verses of Saraswati Purnima tells us that while making the universe, Lord Brahma ji also took an essence of himself and made “Saraswati” his daughter. According to Hindu mythology, she was the first goddess who was created and not born.

Goddess Saraswati had bold and beautiful features. It has also been said that when she appeared in front of Brahma, she was glowing like gold.

After seeing her, God Brahma was also amazed by how beautiful his daughter was. Eventually, his feelings grew stronger with each passing day. And he thought of marrying her. After knowing this, Goddess Saraswati thought of hiding in every possible direction she could.

But God Brahma Dev was destined to marry Saraswati and found her anyhow. After some time, Goddess Saraswati had to give up and agree to marry her father.

According to Brahma Purana, “Shatarupa”, the goddess of multiple forms, was the only daughter of Lord Brahma. She was created by taking a bit of every body part of Lord Brahma himself. Also, Maa Saraswati was just another form of goddess Shatarupa.

Why does Goddess Saraswati curse Brahma ji?

According to the mythology story, once, while Lord Brahma was meditating, he was so lost in it that he didn’t notice that a few petals of his lotus flower failed on barren land, on his heart.

When he opened his eyes and noticed that fallen petals had turned into beautiful lakes, so he felt pleased and went to that place. He named this place “Pushkar”.

Also, he decided to perform ceremonial Yagya at that place. For this Yagya, it was important to become successful, he was told to call his wife “Saraswati”.

He asked Narad Mundi to go to Saraswati and give her a message. So, as guided, Narad Ji went to her and asked to come and join Lord Brahma for the Yagya. But goddess Saraswati said she would only go with Goddess Lakshmi, Parvati, and Indrani.

As a result, she was not able to reach the venue at the designated time. This made Lord Brahma angry. He felt disrespected and decided not to wait and out of rage, he married Goddess Gayatri on the spot and asked her to join the Yagya.

Both of them completed the Yagya successfully and in the end, when Goddess Saraswati arrived with other Goddesses, she was shocked to see Goddess Gayatri sitting next to her husband.

In her full angst, Maa Saraswati curses Lord Brahma, by saying that nobody would ever worship him. Also, he will not have any sacred places in his regard. On seeing this situation, everybody pleased Lord Shiva to stop this fight.

Why did only Pushkar have a Brahma temple?

When Lord Shiva arrived at the site, he asked Maa Saraswati to ease down on the curse. So, after she calmed down, she said only in this place would Lord Brahma be worshipped.

After that day, it is believed that Lord Brahma has been worshipped in Pushkar, Rajasthan, and a few other places in India because of the curse. It is also believed that Maa Saraswati sat near the Brahma Pushkar temple.

And she is still there to give her blessings to all the married women for the long life of their husbands. Few people believe that she cursed him, but she also sat near the Brahma temple out of her love for Lord Brahma.
