The 13th day of the Kurukshetra war: The death of Ghatotkacha

Before we know about the death of Ghatotkacha, let’s first understand how the battle began and what caused the Kauravas to attack the Pandavas and their armies.

    1. Arjun’s attempt to take revenge

On the 13th day after Abhimanyu’s death, Arjun came to know who killed his son. He was responsible for Abhimanyu’s death and had a boon from Shiva to stop the Pandav brothers and their armies from entering the Chakravyuh. Due to Jayadratha's actions, many Kaurava warriors were able to overpower Abhimanyu, who bravely fought alone.

Also, Arjun was ready to take revenge for losing his son. Arjun, extremely upset and mad, promised to take Jayadratha's life. He also said that if he couldn't kill Jayadratha before sunset, he would end his own life by jumping into a fire.

    1. Krishna's plan to protect Arjun and kill Jayadratha

Shakuni, the uncle of Jayadratha, hid him in the crowd of the Kauravas army to protect him. As sunset approached, Arjun searched for Jayadratha but didn’t find him. This frustrated him about being unable to kill Jayadratha, and he was ready to jump into the fire.

After this, lord Krishna interfered and created a false sunset by holding up his Sudarshana Chakra against the sun, creating the illusion of sunset. Shakuni believed the sun had set and called out Jayadratha, who was hiding among the Kauravas forces.

As a result, Krishna told Arjun that the sun hadn’t fully set, as he still completed his vow. Arjun fired a divine arrow that beheaded Jayadratha, and his head landed in his father Vridhakshatra's lap.
