The Story of Barbarika: The Hero Who Chose Not to Fight in the Mahabharata

When you think of the most powerful warriors in the Mahabharata war, what comes to your mind? Are you thinking of Arjuna, Karana or Ekalavya? No, Ghatotkacha's son was a Barbarika.

He was a warrior and could end the Mahabharata war in just a minute. But you might think why Barbarika didn’t fight? Come, let’s understand Barbarika’s story and his powers.

    Who was Barbarika?

According to Hindu mythology, Barbarika was a brave and skilled warrior. The son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi, the daughter of Daita Moora. Barbarika was known to be a mighty warrior who was impossible to defeat. It is a true believer in Lord Shiva.

According to Barbarika’s story, when he was born, he had massive powers. So, his mother Mauravi, also known as Ahilavati, taught him the art of warfare. He was given 3 arrows and the arrows of the eight gods, which had the power to destroy everything.

    What made Barbarika so powerful?

A lot of people don’t talk about Barbarika and her powers because they don’t know her. Everyone knows about the Mahabharata War, but few know about the villain who had the power to end the war in just a minute. According to Hindu scriptures, Barbarika believed in Shiva since childhood, which made him an accomplished warrior.

Why Barbarika didn’t fight in Mahabharata?

The story is lengthy, so let’s break it down into smaller sections: -

Barbarika’s sacrifice: Promise to his mother

You might wonder why Barbarika didn’t fight in Mahabharata. Well, Barbarika’s story proves that power comes with great responsibility. He had some principles and promises to keep that prevented him from participating in the war.

After hearing about the war between the Kauravas and Pandavas, he rode his blue horse, equipped with 3 arrows, to the battlefield. Before leaving, he promised his mother that he would only join the war if important and only on the side facing failure.

Krishna disguised himself to see how strong Barbarika was.

After Barbarika reached to battlefield, Krishna saw him heading toward the field with just 3 arrows. Krishna got curious about Barbarika’s power because he claimed he could finish the battle in just a minute. On hearing this, Krishna wanted to test his power and disguised himself as a Brahmin.

Also, to test the power of Barbarika’s arrow, Krishna asks him to collect all the leaves of the trees in one place under which both were standing. While Barbarika closed his eyes to shoot his 1st arrow, Krishna tricked him and hid 1 leaf under his feet.

Barbarika was ready to shoot his arrow, but the leaves around Krishna's feet stopped him. On this, Barbarika says there might be 1 leaf under your feet and ask him to lift his legs, or else the arrow will hurt your feet. This made Krishna realize the strength and power of Barbarika.

Krishna asked Barbarika about joining the war.

After realizing the power and Barbarika’s story, Krishna asked him which side he would live to fight for. Barbarika said that he had a principle of fighting for the weaker side, and since the Pandavas had a smaller army, he would fight for them. The Kauravas had 11 Akshauhini armies, while the Pandavas only had 7, making the Pandavas the weaker side.

Also, Krishna considers this situation risky even if Barbarika fights from the Pandava's side. This is because Barbarika begins to fight from the side of the Pandavas, and the Kauravas become weaker ones. So, Barbarika started switching sides in the war because of what his mother told him.

In that case, Krishna explains the chronology of the situation that made Barbarika realize that it would not be fair even if he fought from either side.

Barbarika's Sacrifice: The triumph of good over evil.

After a discussion with Lord Krishna, he decided not to fight for either side. So, Krishna suggested he sacrifice his head, as before the war began, the bravest Kshatriya had to sacrifice something to the Guru.

Barbarika, the bravest of all warriors, would give his head as a gift to his teacher. This sacrifice of cruelty plays a vital role in ensuring that righteousness triumphs over wickedness and prevents needless bloodshed.
