Bheeshma's Life and His Decision to Stay Unmarried: The Untold Story

We all know about the epic tale of Mahabharata, where Bheeshma, played an important role and taught us a lesson on sacrifice. He was a great warrior and human being. Do you know why he didn’t marry? Let's talk about it more thoroughly.

    Who was Bheeshma?

Bheeshma is also called Pitamaha, Devvrata, Gangaputra, Gauranga, and Mahamina. He was the 8th son of King Shantanu from the Kuru family and the oldest Kuru during the Mahabharata war. Bheeshma was a son of Shantanu ad Ganga. But he didn’t spend his childhood in his father’s place.

    Bheeshma’s life: Childhood of Pitamah

When Shantanu asked Ganga for marriage, she said yes, but on the condition that he will not ask her about where she comes from and where she goes. Their marriage went well, and she gave birth to many children. She also took her children to Ganga and threw them in the river, this angered the king. The king stopped her when she was about to do the same with her 8th child. This broke the ganga’s heart and she carried the child with her.

Bheeshma spent his early years with his mother Ganga in Devalok and received an education for 16 years. He was brilliant at learning many skills. He learned skills from many gods, like political science from Brihaspati, the art of weapons from Parshuram, and dandaneeti from Shukra.

    Bheeshma: A great warrior

Bheeshma was a great warrior and eldest in the Mahabharata War. As he grew old, he didn’t fail to defeat any warriors because Parshuram taught him. Also in Mahabharata War, he was the commander of Kauravas for 10 days.

Do you want to know what made him so powerful? As Bheeshma was a devoted child of his father and took a vow for him, his father gifted him Mrityu, which means easy death. He got the boon that he would not kill with any weapon. Also, he got divine blessings and wisdom. His archery skills were excellent and he shot accurately.

    Bheeshma’s decision: The self-less sacrifice

Bheesham was known for teaching us the value of sacrifice in our lives. Bheesham chose duty over marriage for his father, Shantanu, who fell in love with a lady named Satywati, who he met on the river Ganga’s bank. Shantanu fell in love with the woman and asked her to marry him. Her father agreed, but on condition that Satyawati’s children would become rulers of the throne.

    Why did Bheeshma not marry?

Shantanu refused, but Bheeshma promised to stay celibate and take care of his father's needs. By making this vow, Bheeshma gave up the joy of marriage. Shantanu did not agree to make such a strict promise for his son, but Bhishma chose duty over marriage. Because of this, his father gave him the gift of Mrityu.

This created problems in his life when he refused to marry Amba, the eldest daughter of King Kashya. As he refused to marry Amba, she cursed him to kill him in his next life. Because of this he lived an unmarried life and served his kingdom and family as a Brahmachari.

Also, after Satyavati’s son Chitrangada died childless, as the kingdom was rural, he chose Satyavati’s youngest son Vichitravirya as the king to rule the kingdom.

    Nishkama Karma: Importance

By choosing duty over marriage, Bheeshma taught one Nishkama Karma. As Nishkama Karma means doing your duties without thinking about its fruits. Bheeshma chose to give up personal marital happiness to make his father happy and content. He first thought about his family and who would rule the kingdom. As a Brahmachari, he left pleasures and happiness and thought about his family and kingdom.

He was the son of Ganga, so he gained the best knowledge of archery and education. He received blessings from the gods, served the kingdom faithfully, and fought strongly against his family's enemies. His wisdom was the main reason for his selfless action for his father.
