“Ahoi” comes from “Aho” which means “Fasting day” and “Ashtami” which means “Eight days”. Mothers celebrate Ahoi Ashtami to ensure the safety and security of their children. This is observed on the 8th day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik, which comes in October or November.

Ahoi Ashtami vrat 2024: Significances

In Hinduism, every Hindu ritual is significant as it is rooted in their religious and cultural beliefs. The significance of rituals and pujas lies in many reasons. People have performed rituals and pujas for centuries, and it becomes an important part of our lives.

Mothers wake up early in the morning and have a pre-dawn meal called “sargi”. They keep a fast from sunrise to sunset. They break their fast after looking at stars in the evening sky.

The main ritual of Ahoi Ashtami puja includes making a sacred painting of goodness Ahoi. People usually make the face of a lioness in this painting, as they believe that the lion is the vehicle of the goddess Ahoi. They draw images on walls or paper and place a small vessel known as “Karwa” in front of it. It is believed that by placing karva in front of the image, the goddess gives them blessings.

Also, mothers offer prayers to the goddess, taking her blessings for the well-being and prosperity of their children. They also pray for forgiveness if they make any mistake during Ahoi Ashtami's fast process. After that they fill karva with water and make 7 clay pots around it, representing 7 sons of goddess Ahoi.

How do you worship Ahoi Ashtami?

Mothers in India, especially in north India, observe a special festival called Ahoi Ashtami. On this auspicious day, the mother performs a ritual related to the goddess Ahoi, the deity who blesses and protects children. The preparation for Ahoi Ashtami starts a day prior, on Saptami when women clean their homes and make sacred spaces for puja.

People usually draw pictures of Goddess Ahoi on the walls or paper as the main tradition of Ahoi Ashtami. The picture depicts a woman carrying a vessel or jar filled with water and grains like wheat or rice. Some women use metal plates or wooden boards to draw the goddess Ahoi. The jar or vessels represent fertility and abundance, while the grain represents nourishment and wealth.

After drawing the image, they make a small hole near the jar and pass a thread to it. This thread is considered sacred and wear it as a protective thread, believing that it protects the well-being of children.

During Ahoi Ashtami puja, all mothers gather around the image and offer prayer to the goddess Ahoi. They light a lamp and incense sticks and recite special mantras related to deity. One of the most common recited mantras is:

“सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके। शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥”

Mothers recite this mantra to take the blessings of goddess Ahoi for the well-being, health, and prosperity of their children. After prayers, women offer fruits, sweets, and other traditional delicacies to the goddess Ahoi. It was later distributed as prasad to family members and neighbors. The fast breaks after they look at the moon and offer water to it.
