    Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024 is one of the most famous festivals in Hindus which starts from the Jagannath Temple in Puri. In this journey, lord Jagannath, his brother Balram, and his sister Subhadra are taken out in chariots.

    What is the beginning date for Jagannath Yatra?

    1. According to the Vedic calendar, Jagannath Rath Yatra will start on July 07 at 08:05 am on Thursday.
    2. This yatra will start at 09. 27 in the morning.
    3. After this, the journey will start later again at 12:15 pm.
    4. Then the journey will take a break at 01:37.
    5. After this, the journey will restart at 04:39 pm.
    6. After this, the journey will continue till 06:01 p.m.

    Significance and origin of the chariot festival in Jagannath temple

    Devotees have been coming out for the festival and the journey of Lord Jagannath has been celebrated for many years. There are historical places around the Kailash Man Sarovar that depict that this yatra began in the 12th century. As per a popular fairy tale, Lord Krishna started Rath Yatra along with his sister Subhadra along with Balram ji. It could be considered that starting from this time or even earlier the tradition of its emergence began.

    Helps attain salvation

    While in this yatra, devotees accompany the chariot and keep on reciting the mantras on their drums. It is believed that by participating in this yatra, all the knowingly or unknowingly committed sins are eliminated or pardoned and a person can start a new life.

    Snana Purnima

    Rath Yatra preparations are initiated much before the day of procession. Snana Purnima is one of the major rituals out of which the Rath Yatra is held a fortnight before the celebration. The start of any of the festivals is highlighted by an arch, and on this day, the deities are bathed with 108 pots of purified water. The idols are then bathed and isolated in the temple for fifteen days and cultural tradition says that the idols get sick during this period, known as ‘Anasara’ Finally, only on the day of Rath Yatra, the idols are displayed for the public.

    Netrotsava

    The day preceding the actual festival is Netrotsava or the Eye Festival; the eyes of the chariot deities are dressed up on this day as if they have just regained their sight and are, therefore, ready for the journey. As a rite, it symbolizes the awakening of gods and as a result, gives a moral uplift to the devotees.

    Ritual of Chhera Pahara

    One of the prominent events of the Rath Yatra is the Chhera Pahara. Another ceremony that occupies a significant place is related to the King of Puri, who is the chief servitor of the Lord. The king would then use a broom the handle of which is made of gold, he then showers with sandalwood water, which emphasizes royalty and discernment before the lords of heaven. Such an act underlines the fact that no matter how high or low one is, one stands equal in the face of Lord Jagannath with everyone else. Thousands of devotees drag the chariots with the help of long ropes, which is considered highly favorable.

    The Majestic Chariots

    The chariots used in Jagannath Rath Yatra are wooden structures, each with different characteristics and decoration:

    1. Lord Jagannath's Chariot (Nandighosa): This is one of the largest chariots, with 16 wheels and a height of 44 feet. It is enhanced with a red and yellow cover.
    2. Lord Balabhadra's Chariot (Taladhwaja): This is slightly smaller, with 14 wheels and a height of 43 feet. It is enhanced with a blue and red cover.
    3. Goddess Subhadra's Chariot (Darpadalana): This is one of the smallest, with 12 wheels and a height of 42 feet. It is enhanced with a black and red cover.
