The teaching and life of Lord Mahavira
Lord Mahavira was born in Bihar during the 4th century BCE. He is also known as Vardhamana. And in many ways, he is similar to Siddartha Gautama. Like him, Vardhamana also left his comfortable home to find truth in the world after being sheltered from the outside world.
After meeting with people from many cultures and backgrounds, he learned much about the world and the sources of suffering. And he decided to focus his efforts on fasting and meditation. Through this, he found enlightenment.
He finds that humans must remove greed and their connections to worldly possession to end their limitless pursuits of needs. With his knowledge, he travelled in India and other areas of Asia to spread Jainism. During this time, his kingdom experiences a period of extreme prosperity.
Many people converted to Jainism with hopes that they can experience a similar state of happiness. After achieving moksha, Vardhamana died. In 425 BCE, he became known as lord Mahavira, the final omniscient teacher of the Dharma. Many people celebrate this festival to reflect on their actions and the teachings of Lord Mahavira.
