1. Early life and marriage

Meerabai was born in 1948 CE in Kudki, a village in Rajasthan, into a Rajput royal family. From a young age, she exhibited intense love for Lord Krishna. People say that her love for Krishna was so deep that as a child, she believed herself to be married to him.

Her father Ratan Singh was concerned about her obsession with Krishna, but they hoped that marriage might change her mind. She got married to Bhojraj, the prince of Mewar.

Even after getting married, Meerabai stayed very dedicated to her faith. She didn’t consider her earthly marriage as important as her spiritual bond with Krishna.

2. Challenges and opposition

After her husband’s death, Meerabai faces opposition from her in-laws and society. Her royal status, which needed strict adherence to societal norms, became the reason for conflict.

Her strong love for Krishna, which included singing and dancing in temples in front of everyone, was thought to be not right for a woman.

Her family tried to curtail her devotion, and it is said that they even tried to poison her to stop her from what they saw as irreligious behavior.  

But her faith in Krishna was unwavering, and it is believed that Krishna miraculously saved her from the poison.

3. Separation from royal life

Unable to conform expectations of her royal family, she eventually renounced her royal life and wandered in northern India, visiting holy sites related to Krishna, like Vrindavan and Dwarka.

It is believed that she lived a simple life, completely surrendered to Krishna. Her songs represent her deep and divine love for Krishna. Many devotional songs, bhajans, continue to be sung by devotees to this day.

Her life’s journey was not just about personal devotion, it was also an act of defiance against the rigid, patriarchal structure of her time. She is known for personal freedom, religious devotion, and the power of divine love.
