    Valmiki Jayanti 2024: A Famous Sage & His Contribution to Sanskrit

    Valmiki Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the great author and sage. Maharishi Valmiki is the author of the great Hindu epic Ramayana, as well as the 1st poet of Sanskrit literature.

    The Ramayana, which tells the story of Lord Ram, was written in Sanskrit and obtains 24,000 verses divided into 7 “Kandas”. To honor this reversed saint, Valmiki Jayanti is observed. This day is known as “Pragat Divas” and is observed with enthusiasm in India’s northern regions.


    Valmiki Jayanti 2024: Date

    According to the Hindu calendar, Maharishi Valmiki's birthday is observed on the Purnima tithi of the month of Ashwin, that is Purnima in the month of Ashwin is also celebrated as Sharad Purnima, which comes in September-October according to the Gregorian Calendar.  Valmiki Jayanti is going to be celebrated on 17th October 2024.

    Importance of Valmiki Jayanti

    Valmiki Jayanti has great importance in Hinduism because it celebrates Maharishi Valmiki’s contribution. He wrote Ramayana, Mahabharata and many Puranas. The celebration of Valmiki Jayanti is to honor a great saint who overcame his limitations and inspired the people to fight for social justice through his teachings. He explained Lord Ram’s values and acknowledged him as a man of goodness.


    Maharishi Valmiki story

    According to mythology, Maharishi Valmiki met lord ram during his exile. After Lord Ram asked Sita to leave the kingdom of Ayodhya, he rescued her and sheltered her. She gave birth to twins, Luv and Kush, in his ashram. The great sage became their teacher when they were young, teaching them the Ramayana, which contains 24,000 verses and 7 cantos.

    It was also believed that Valmiki was a highway dacoit named Ratnakar. He was born to a wise man named Prachetasa near the Ganges River. His birth name was Ratnakara. As a child, he got lost in jungles and was found by a hunter, who raised him as a son. He grew up to be a hunter like his father, but he lived his life by being a bandit. He eventually met Maharishi Narada in an attempt to rob him. He usually robs and murders people until he meets Narad Muni, who converts him into a follower of Lord Ram.

    After years of meditation, a divine voice declared his penance successful and gave the name Valmiki, the one who was born from ant-hills. For being the 1st poet of Sanskrit literature, he was later known as Adi Kavi. Since then, Hindu believers have continued to recite his work, especially the great epic Ramayana. The exact date and time of Maharishi Valmiki's birth are not known, but it is thought he lived around 500 BC.

    Valmiki Jayanti Rituals

    1. People pay their respects to the famous saint and poet Valmiki Jayanti. Many yatras carrying Valmiki’s portrait are held in many towns and villages. On this day, Hindus worship him. Prayers are offered to his portrait in many places.
    2. On this day, the story of Ramayana is held in Lord Ram temples all over India. In India, there are many temples related to Maharishi Valmiki. These temples are decorated with flowers on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti. Many incense sticks are lit, creating a pure and blissful atmosphere. In these temples, kirtan and bhajan programs are held. On this day many believers visit Lord Ram's temples and chant a few verses from Ramayana in remembrance of Maharishi Valmiki.
    3. On this day, people distribute free food to the needy. Doing charity will be extremely rewarding.

    1. On Valmiki Jayanti, let’s explore some interesting and unknown facts about Maharishi Valmiki:
    2. He was the 1st poet of Sanskrit literature. His other name is Adi Kavi.  He is the only person from ancient India who was skilled in both Sanskrit and Tamil languages.
    3. In his early years, he was a highway dacoit known as Ratnakar, who robbed people and killed them.
    4. There is a community Balmiki, and this group of people worship Valmiki as their ancestors and God. Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan are home to these people.
    5. It is believed that the Maharishi Valmiki temple in Chennai’s Thiruvanmiyur is 1300 years old.
    6. The Valmiki Temple is under the supervision of another temple called Marundeeswarar Temple which was constructed during Chola's reign. It is believed that Valmiki visited at Marundeeswarar temple to worship Lord Shiva following which the region was named Thiruvalmikiyur.
    7. He once observed a bird couple in love. At the same time, a hunter shot one bird down with an arrow and the bird died on the spot. This incident made him angry and in pain, he wrote a shloka, which is the 1st shloka in Sanskrit.
    8. The Ramayana he wrote has 24,507 chapters.
    9. According to Vishnu Dharmottara Purana, he is a form of God “Vishnu”. People who want to improve their knowledge and wisdom should offer prayer to him.
    10. Lord Ram’s sons Luv and Kush, were his first students to whom he taught the Ramayana.
