    Mysore Dasara 2024: History behind the celebration of Mysore Dasara festival

    It was during the 15th century when the Vijayanagar king began to celebrate Mysore Dasara. It was the Wodeyar of Mysore who, following this tradition as it were, after the fall of the Vijayanagar kingdom, continued the legacy. It was in the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, the festival was held amongst the royal hierarchy in an assembly at Mysore Palace in 1805.

    The state government revived it in 1970 and the public started celebrating it to make it maintain its grandeur and effulgence. People of this region are celebrating this festival in the capital state of Mysore which is known as Srirangapatna. Earlier, Jayaprakash Narayan declared Mysore Dusshera as the state festival of Karnataka.

    Let's understand some of the rituals and traditions associated with the Mysore Dasara festival and look at a few of the most exciting events and experiences that make Mysore Dasara 2024 a must-visit.

    1. Inauguration, puja, and cultural events

    The Mysore Dasara 2024 will begin with worship and pay homage to the goddess Chamundi. The festival will take the lead through cultural activities like dance and music to portray their culture, many celebrated artists are going to join hands to give a spark to the festival.

    2. Folk arts and folklore

    During Mysore Dasara, folk groups represent unique forms of singing, drama, dance, and puppet shows that represent the culture of the state. The popular folk groups will be performing on the streets of Mysore.

    Some of the very few special performances and folk arts include Pooja Kunitha, Dollu Kunitha, Beesu Kamsale and Kamsale Nritya, Somana Kunita, and Somana Kunitha.

    3. Mysore Palace light show

    The elephant procession is another exciting event to witness during the Mysore Dasara festival. The elephants march on the city of Mysore. This procession happens on the 10th day of Vijayadashami, on which the idol goddess Chamundeshwari is placed on top of the decorated elephant.

    Moreover, the idol is first placed on a golden platform, which is adorned with about 750 kilograms of gold, and then it is placed on an elephant. The elephant marches around the city, spreading joy and excitement.

    1. Cultural exhibition

    You can see traditional dance performances, music concerts, arts and crafts stalls, and food festivals. You will also experience many cultural shows spotlighting the legacy of Mysore and Karnataka.

    The people of Mysore primarily introduced these exhibitions to showcase their latest inventions and developments. Also, the Karnataka Exhibition Authority took over the organization of the exhibition in 1987.

    1. Torchlight parade

    The torchlight parade also known as “Panjina Kavayatthu”, takes place in the evening of Vijayadashami. The Mysore Dasara torchlight parade timings are from 6:00 P.m. to 10:00 P.m., which will happen on Bannimantap ground. During this parade, many cultural and military organizations participated.

    The parade begins with the chief guest lighting a torch. Then, the procession starts with beautifully decorated tableaux, elephants, horses, camels, cultural actors, and the performances of many military bands. The parade is the march past performed by armed forces, showcasing their discipline.
