What is Bali Pratipada?

This festival is dedicated to the demon king, Bali Pratipada. We celebrate Bali Pratipada and Govardhan puja on 4th day after Diwali. This festival is also known as Balipadyami, Akashadipa, Diwali Padwa, Bali Padwa, Bali Puja, Vira Pratipada, and Dwuta Pratipada.

Lord Vishnu took his 5th avatar, Vamana, on this day. People celebrate this festival by wearing new clothes and exchanging gifts with each other. On this day, people honor King Bali and take his blessings. In Gujarat, this celebration marks the start of the Vikram Samvat year. Bali Pratipada 2024: Story and importance

The festival Bali Pratipada has a great story behind it. Bali was a strong and kind-hearted demon king. He wanted the position of lord Indra in Inraloka. For this, he performed 99 Ashwamedha yajnas. The demi-gods were scared that if he completed his 100th yajna, he might take the place of Indra and ask for anything beyond the limit. The gods told Lord Vishnu to check Bali’s power. Vishnu accepted their request and took birth as the son of Aditi. He took the avatar of Vamana (dwarf).   

How will we celebrate Bali Pratipada in 2024?

People visit the temples of lord Vishnu and offer him worship, to take his blessings. People organize fairs, processions, cultural dances, and music on this day. People offer King Naivedyam to satisfy his hunger. You can also draw an image of demon king Bali and his wife Vidyumali at the center of the house.

This is the best time for buying or selling properties and performing wedding rituals. People make rangoli with rice powder and food from wheat, rice, and vegetables. We also perform Bhai Dooj rituals by making the foreheads of our brothers.

Celebration of the festival in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, people celebrate Bali Pratipada as Padwa, where we honor the bond of a married couple. Married women perform aarti and mark a tilak on their husband’s foreheads. The husband gives her wife gifts and appreciates the love and respect they have for each other. People make dishes like Farshan, Puran Poli, and Shrikhand and distribute them as Prasad.

In many rural areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat, people worship cattle for their contribution to agriculture. People decorate cows with garlands, vermillion, and turmeric are applied on their horns. To honor the power of Bali, we organize traditional matches, including wrestling.

Bali Pratipada 2024: Celebration in Karnataka

Karnataka people celebrate this festival as Balipadyami, by offering prayer to the Tulsi plant. People make sweet Holige, which is distributed to neighbors and relatives.  On this day, people donate food to the needy. People also worship goddess Parvati and Kedara Gauri.

On Bali Pratipada, people also offer food to their ancestors and pay respect to them. They organize a game of dice related to the festival. People also made clay or mud idols of King Bali and his wife Vidyunmali.

Bali Pratipada 2024: Puja Vidhi

1. You should need to follow these puja Vidhi’s on this festival:
2. You should wake up early in the morning and take Sankalp to worship King Bali and Lord Vishnu.
3. People should create a clay statue of King Bali and present him with flowers, food, incense, sweets, and other offerings.
4. You should also worship Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu, recite mantras, and offer him flowers and sweets.
5. Govardhan puja is also performed on the same day. On this day, you can make a small mud hill.
6. You should need to distribute the prasad to family members after puja.
