What is Govatsa Dwadashi?

In Govatsa Dwadashi, we worship the divine cow, Nandini. It is observed on the 12th day of Krishna Paksha in the Ashwin month. This year Govatsa Dwadashi is taking place on 28th October. Govatsa Dwadashi is also known as Varas, Vasubaras, Nandini Vrat, etc.

On Govatsa Dwadashi, we offer love and gratitude to the cows. You can decorate the image and idols of cows with turmeric and Kumkum. People don’t drink cow’s milk or take other products made from milk. In north India, this festival is celebrated as Vagh Baras.

Women keep vrat to honor cows, representing prosperity and fertility. In Maharashtra, it is celebrated as Vasu Baras. This festival marks the start of the Diwali festival.

Story of Govatsa Dwadashi festival

Lord Krishna told the people of Vrindavan to worship cows on Govatsa Dwadashi. As he said they will get rid of their sins and get blessings for their cattle. From that moment, we celebrate this sacred festival.

The other story is about 2 queens Sita and Geeta, as they were wives of the monarch Devdani. They had one buffalo, a cow, and a baby cow. Sita adored the buffalo, and Geeta loved cow and calf. One day, buffalo told Sita that Geeta don’t love him. This made Sita very angry, so she killed the baby cow and hid it in the wheat bag. The king saw blood spots on the food on his plate.

This horrified him, and he heard that Queen Sita had killed the calf. The voice told the monarch that he must do a few things if he wanted the calf to return to life. The voice told me to slaughter a buffalo on Govatsa Dwadashi. It also told him not to consume milk and eat chopped fruits. The king did the same and got the calf’s life back. This is a reason women keep fast on this day.

Importance of Govatsa Dwadashi

This festival is in Bhavisya Purana, the Hindu scripture. On this day, people worship the Nandini cow. She is the mother of all cows that give us nourishment. Mother keep fast for their children’s long life.

Women who have no child will soon be blessed with a child. On this day people worship lord Dattatreya, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Women generally make small idols of different animals like tigers, tigresses, cows, and calves to worship them.

Important rituals of Govatsa Dwadashi

Some important rituals of Govatsa Dwadashi are:

1. Cows are washed on this day and vermillion on their foreheads. The cows and calves are decorated and given a garland of flowers to wear.
2. If you can’t find a cow on the day of Govatsa Dwadashi, you can make mud cows and calves to worship.  
3. Apply turmeric and Kumkum to mud idols. In the evening, an aarti should performed.
4. Offer cows moong and gram to eat. Decorate Gaushalas with flowers and lamps.
5. You can also decorate your home with rangoli.
6. On Govatsa Dwadashi, you should worship lord Vishnu as he is the deity of cows.
7. Women keep fast on this day for food health of their children. 
8. If you are keeping fast then you should refrain from physical exercise or activity at night.
9. You should sleep on the floor at night if you keep a fast.
10. Don’t consume milk and its products on this Govatsa Dwadashi. You can also visit the temples of lord Vishnu.
11. The Panchagavya made from cow urine, jaggery, cow dung, coconut, and water are sprinkled all over the house for purification.
