    Onam is a harvest festival that is celebrated in India during the Chingam (August or September) period, mainly in Kerala. This day marks the celebration of Lord Mahabali, a powerful deity. It is believed that God Vishnu gave Shri Mahabali the blessing to arrive on earth once a year to see its believers and bless them.

    People welcome lord Mahabali almost a 10–12-day celebration with specific rituals related to each day. Pookalam, the floral rangoli, is the festival’s highlight and is found at the entrance of each house in Kerala during the Onam period. This festival also welcomes harvest season, when individuals thank the land for the good returns.

    Onam Festival 2024: Pooja Vidhi or Rituals

    Make your Onam Festival 2024 meaningful by following Onam rituals rightly. Let’s explore the Onam puja Vidhi for 10-12 days:

    1. On 1st day, called Atham, visit visit Vamanamoorthy Thirrikara Temple in Kochi. Then start designing floral rangoli with yellow and orange flowers at the temple and home entrance.
    2. On the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th day, add a new circle to your rangoli, buy new clothes, and thank the land for giving you a good harvest.
    3. On 5th, 6th, and 7th day, Kerala has famous boat racing on Anizham day, visiting family and lighting homes on Thriketa and Onasadya, and serving famous meals on Moolam.
    4. On the 8th day install a clay pyramid-shaped statue of Lord Vishnu and Mahabali in your home’s courtyard. On the 9th day, clean the house and buy fruits and vegetables.
    5. On the 10th day, put flour batter at the entrance and donate food to the needy. People also do traditional dances like Thiruvathirakali, Kummattikali, Onam Kali, and the famous Pulikali or Leopard dance.
    6. The 11th day marks as immersion of Onathappan in holy waters, cleaning the rangoli, giving farewell to Lord Mahabali, and sending him back to Patal. On the 12th day, people continued the celebration through dance.

    Onam Festival 2024: History

    The Onam festival takes us back to the story of King Mahabali, who is coming during the festival. He was a kind-hearted king who held 3 worlds (Heaven, Earth, and Patal Lok). This tensed the gods, especially Indra. The gods requested Lord Vishnu to take his power.

    Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana and begged him for 3 step cities. Mahabali agreed but when Vamana grew in size, covering the earth, heaven, and his head. So, Mahabali goes to Patala. But his behavior impressed Vishnu, who blessed him with the opportunity to visit his city, Kerala, once in year, naming it Onam.
